FAQ
What is The Japanese Paper Place Reserve?
The Japanese Paper Place Reserve (The JPP Reserve) is a retail subsidiary of The Japanese Paper Place Ltd. offering select, fine Japanese papers available in limited quantities.
Can I buy wholesale?
The JPP Reserve is a retail-only site. To register for a wholesale account, please visit our parent company, The Japanese Paper Place to complete the application form.
What is washi?
Simply put, washi is Japanese paper (wa = Japan and shi = paper). We define “washi” as authentic Japanese paper made in Japan; primarily using the fibre of three renewable shrubs, kozo, mitsumata and gampi. Washi made with these fibres is exquisitely beautiful, durable, and long-lasting. Choosing washi for your project is not only elevates your work, but also supports the sustainability of traditional papermaking in Japan.
What is Heritage Washi?
“Heritage Washi” is a term coined by The Japanese Paper Place for washi that is handmade by skilled artisans, using the earth-friendly materials and techniques taught for generations. Considered the best of the best, these papers are particularly versatile, strong, archival, and sustainably made. The recommended choice for use by conservators and fine artists.
About us
When Nancy Jacobi first opened the doors of our parent company, The Japanese Paper Place Ltd., on Queen St West, it was a retail shop catering to artists and paper-lovers in Toronto. Over the years, the business grew and expanded to become a wholesale operation supplying resellers, artists, and conservators with fine Japanese paper internationally.
There are still many fine papers remaining from those early retail days. Many are no longer being made, and most are in quantities that are too limited to be offered viably as a wholesale product. Additionally, we have a selection of washi that is ideal for conservation purposes, not all of it is vintage, but it is made in small batches. We believe that these beautiful papers deserve to be in the hands of artists and conservators. Harkening back to our early retail days, with a new online shopping presence that we are sure you will enjoy, we are pleased to present The Japanese Paper Place Reserve.
