Katazome-shi is washi printed by hand using katazome, a stencil dyeing technique developed in Kyoto for kimono textiles and adapted in the 20th century for printing paper. The vibrant, long-lasting colours are achieved using soy-based pigments and aids.
In early 2025, the renowned katazome-shi studio Wazome Kogei ceased production. These memo pads, covered with their treasured katazome-shi, carry timeless reminders of this beautiful craft.
